Morocco. Safi. A potter makes pottery by hand. Tea and coffee cups. Pottery is the process and the products of forming vessels and other objects with clay and other raw materials which are fired at high temperatures to give them a hard and durable form. A ball of clay is placed in the centre of a turntable, called the wheel-head, which the potter rotates with a stick, with foot power or with a variable-speed electric motor. During the process of throwing, the wheel rotates while the solid ball of soft clay is pressed, squeezed and pulled gently upwards and outwards into a hollow shape. Much pottery is purely utilitarian, but some can also be regarded as ceramic art. 17.05.2024
