Aerial views show water hyacinth farmers floating along the soil-free plant beds known as ‘Dhap’. The farmers were preparing them for the cultivation of new crops in Nazirpur, Pirojpur, Bangladesh. Anindita Roy said, “This farming method has been part of the regional heritage in the southern part of the country where people experience frequent natural disasters, such as floods, cyclones, and sea level rises.” “This is becoming very popular and demanding because it provides a solution to the challenges posed by climate change in the region. As Bangladesh is at high risk due to the impacts of climate change, this method could become a very popular solution for other parts of the country, especially in regions that experience waterlogged conditions.” Please byline: Anindita Roy/Solent News © Anindita Roy/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** When and where were these shots taken? Ans: The images were taken on the 17th of July, 2024, at Nazirpur, Pirojpur, Bangladesh. Can you describe what is happening in these images? Ans: Some farmers are installing seeds on the ready floating beds here, and some are preparing the floating beds. Using water hyacinth, farmers are preparing the floating soil-free beds, which are locally called “Dhap,” to cultivate vegetables. They bring the water hyacinth using their boats. Almost all beds are ready here; a few are still in the process. Is this method of vegetable farming common in this country? Is there a high demand? Ans: This farming method has been part of regional heritage in southern part of the country where people experiences frequent natural disasters, such as floods, cyclones, and sea level rise. This is becoming very popular and demanding because they provide a solution to the challenges posed by climate change in the region. How much are they sold for? Individual price would be best if possible. Ans : Average around US$ 1. How were you able to capture these images? Ans: I captured these pictures using my Drone Camera and my Nikon camera. I reached the destination using a hired engine boat, as there is no other transportation available other than water vehicles. Is there any more information you would like us to include? Ans :The whole process is very environmentally friendly and has no negative impact on the environment. All necessary resources are natural and create no waste with negative impact. As Bangladesh is at high risk due to the impacts of climate change, this method could become a very popular solution for other parts of the country, especially in regions that experience waterlogged conditions. Finally, has anything changed for you biographically since the last set we sent? — No change
